THE MOST BEAUTIFUL HOME I’VE EVER ORGANIZED, DESIGNED BY CLIFF MAY, RENOVATED AND DECORATED BY MARMOL RADZINER
My favorite architectural design firm Marmol Radziner just announced the completion of the renovation of the most beautiful home I’ve ever organized and styled - A Cliff May western ranch style bungalow that producer Amy Pascal’s bought which reside in Brentwood’s Sullivan Canyon. The home looks exactly how I remember it. I worked in the home for a month The home still had one of Cliff May’s signature features - an intercom system. One day, Amy came home and screamed into the intercom “oh my God! I love it!” (referring to my work) Which I will never forget.
The bungalow was originally built in the 1950s by legendary architect Cliff May. What I love most about Cliff May’s design is the strong connections between inside and outside. The skylights bath the rooms in natural light, but nothing intense due to the surround foliage and bamboo. Bamboo gardens are also inside the home as well as a collection of over 250 lanterns that hang in every room an outside in trees.
Cliff May's work incorporated environmental design before it was recognized as such, says Dan Gregory, author of Cliff May and the Modern Ranch House. Careful consideration of sun angles, wind directions, vegetation and more went into his designs — concepts that many now seem to be just revisiting. May's ranch homes used the colonial Spanish tradition of covered passageways, or corredores, to connect rooms and blur boundaries between the outside and inside.
Here are some photos of Cliff May’s homes including Amy Pascal’s recent renovation and pre-renovation and other homes.
I would love to live in a modest Cliff May bungalow one day, complete with chickens, a goat, a bee hive, a pond, floral and edible garden.
